Pen Power at The Wardrobe

Your voice. Your pen. Your power.

Pen Power is back and has a brand-new home at The Wardrobe, Leeds. Led by D3, this isn’t your typical, quiet writing class. It’s a high-energy, supportive space designed to help you unlock your creativity, build your confidence, and connect with a community of fellow voices.

What is Pen Power?

Whether you’re a seasoned writer or haven’t picked up a pen since school, Pen Power is about stripping away the “writer’s block” and finding the joy in self-expression. We use a mix of rhythm, real-world inspiration, and unique exercises to get your ideas flowing onto the page.

What to expect at a workshop:

  • The Vibe: Relaxed and informal. We meet in the private space at The Wardrobe (it’s a bar, so this is an 18+ event!).
  • The Flow: We start with a quick game to get to know each other, followed by 90 minutes of fast-paced, guided writing exercises to flex your creative muscles.
  • The Finish: We close every session with our signature “envelope breath” visualization to leave you feeling focused and empowered.
  • The Deal: We believe creativity is better shared! Grab our 2-for-1 “Bring a Buddy” deal and bring a friend along for free.

Hi my name is Denetta Copeland and I am the director of D3 Creations. Have you heard about me? Well, I am a Spoken Word artist who has been on the live gig scene for many years, maybe you’ve had the pleasure of seeing me perform! I’ve also spent over 25 years of my life as a poetry mentor, I worked with the Leeds Young Authors for 12 years, I have worked within the education system and community groups, I have worked with youths that have been removed from the education system and even with young women in Newhall Prison. During the pandemic, I set up my own business to deliver a range of workshops to people of all ages, experience and abilities. D3 Creations help people find their voice and encourages expression.

At D3 Creations we run lots of workshops around creative writing. Helping participants find their voice and or the confidence to share their stories, for their voices to be heard. We look at things like creative writing techniques, writing styles and perspectives. Whether it is for well- being or journaling a difficult time, or finding a way to tap into your creativity – and believe me- you can!

I ran online workshops during lockdown which were interesting as there were people signing up from all over the world allowing a broader range of input for the workshops, as well as gaining friends in many countries. We still have our Whatsapp group now and we still exchange things we have created for feedback.

I have decided to reopen the online workshops for people to sign up and take part in either 1 workshop or a course of workshops because of this reason. Online workshops do have their advantages; you don’t have to travel across town; you don’t need a baby sitter for the kids; you feel comfortable to open up in your own home. As well as disadvantages; Face to face connections; or just getting out of the house!

But if you are stuck at home with kids but want to explore your creativity, this is a perfect solution for you. I think the face to face connection is replaced by the ability to be in a workshop with people from the other side of the world. With a mixture of different countries, cultures and religions there is often interesting insights and perspectives to uncover during workshop exercises. And we all grow together, and I like to think spiritually as well as creatively.

I will be running an online taster session on Thursday 30th January 2025.

I would like to share a quick exercise with you that I made up myself. It can be taken in so many ways that you can do this exercise many times, each time can help organise thoughts in your brain.

Write down ;

I AM…

I FEEL…

I WANT…

I WILL…

And complete the sentences.

You may be direct with those questions I am happy, I am sad, I am confused. I feel exited, I feel let down, I feel torn etc etc
You may want to be more abstract I am orange I feel like I’m bouncing off walls, I want to be purple I will colour myself in – just playful
It could serve as a plan on action

I am determined to be productive today, I feel strong and healthy, I want to finish the jobs in the house I will feel accomplished.

We are so busy in life doing what needs to be done, work, kids, housework and trying to keep up with social events sometimes we don’t have time to consider our own personal wants and desires and I think this little exercise forces you to direct questions to yourself. It leaves no space for fear of judgement or guilt, just a conversation between you and yourself. That you can share with the rest of us if you like! No pressure.

I have many courses and the ability to create bespoke courses for your desired outcome. Right now I will be delivering a 6 week course designed to help you learn how to use writing therapeutically, although I am by no means a mental health practitioner, but writing allows us to process emotions and thoughts in a safe and private space. By writing down your thoughts and feelings, you can release negative emotions and gain a sense of relief. This process can help reduce stress and anxiety levels, leading to improved mental well-being.

Express Yourself for Mental Health is a 6 week course normally charged at £50 per session but for a limited time only, you can get this course for half price, that’s £150 for the whole course. You will also receive a work book, access to my private resources and be added to the global Whatsapp group where you will be welcome for life. This group can offer feedback, advice and fantastic conversations with like-minded people.

Express Yourself for Mental Health will explore basic writing techniques and expand on them depending on experience. We look at different styles of well- being writing including journaling and perspectives. We also spend time playing with rhyming and storytelling in your creativity. The last week is topic writing. We pick a topic of your choice eg, Identity, climate change or even an ode to your cat! We spend some time exploring these topics and gathering information, before embarking on the creation of the piece. Each session consists of some writing exercises to get the creative juices flowing and creating a final piece of work.

I look forward to meeting you!

Thank you for being here,
