In all my workshops I talk about always learning new words. I read the dictionary sometimes (nerd- i know). Growing your vocabulary will inevitably improve your writing. I have shared an alphabet of interesting words you may not have known, and some that we do know but I think we should use them more!

Try using some of these words in a sentence…

Abstemious:

ADJECTIVE

Someone who is abstemious avoids doing too much of something enjoyable such as eating or drinking.

Badinage:

UNCOUNTABLE NOUN

Badinage is humorous or light-hearted conversation that often involves teasing someone.

Storytelling is an art. The art of sharing stories in the form of writing or telling it to an audience, in a way that engages their attention. There are many forms of storytelling, from fiction novels to stand-up comedy. What-ever type of story you share, it ultimately creates a relationship between you and the audience, whether they are physically in front of you or reading your words from a page. The role of the audience is to actively create the vivid, multi-sensory images, actions, characters, and events of the story in their mind. The role of the storyteller is to create these images. The relayed story is re-created in the audience’s imagination, a unique and personalised version.

Creative Writing

In this creative writing blog article, I will share tips on reigniting your creative writing and finding inspiration. Whether you are a seasoned writer or a novice, you will definitely be able to use some of the ideas I share below to give your writing more depth. 

A great way to improve your creative writing is to read lots of different styles of writing with more intent. Observe the craft of how things are described, how emotion is conveyed and how prominent parts of the story has been described. Read the dictionary and learn new words. This is my favourite book, yes, I’m a bit of a word nerd. Use a thesaurus to find alternative or more interesting words to use. Spend time with other writers, join a writing group. All these things will help you grow. I have been a writer for 20 odd years, and I am still learning new techniques - that never ends!
